November is National Family Caregivers Month. This year’s theme is #ICare. Caregiver Action Network, who sets the theme each year, focuses this year’s theme around highlighting the importance of self-recognition and self-identity—key factors in caregivers’ access to essential support. “Identifying as a caregiver opens the door to the family caregiver support needed throughout their journey.”  Learn more why self-identifying as a caregiver is critical in various settings to ensure the care recipient and the caregiver receive appropriate support.

With each passing week of 2025, I can’t help but think about the curse “May you live in interesting times".  It is used to describe a period of significant change, uncertainty, or upheaval, implying that the current era is turbulent and challenging.

To say the least, we do live in interesting times…and we must be vigilant in our efforts to support the most vulnerable in our society.  I am proud of the work Canary Health®/Building Better Caregivers® does to provide mental health support to the unsung heroes in our community who care for their loved ones with significant health and mental health challenges.

Thelma, a participant in and now a facilitator for Building Better Caregivers® (BBC) online workshops shares the value of peer support facilitators vs workshops led by non-peer facilitators. She explains how it improves the health and well-being of Canary Health's workshop participants, and how outcomes of the caregiver and their patient improve.

Facilitator Val, having gone through cancer as a child and experiencing first hand what caregiving looks like, shares how that experience, along with the caregiving she has given to her family over the years, has helped her relate better as a peer to participants than if she didn't have that experience.

Like many, Amy felt isolated during the pandemic. Symptoms such as stress and anxiety began to impact her emotional health. Even though she doesn’t have a physical chronic condition, the peer support in Better Choices, Better Health helped her better manage those symptoms to improve her overall health and well-being.
